Testing schemas

When you make changes to a schema, you must test the changes with the supported clients in your Rational® ClearQuest® environment.

About this task

If you have a significant amount of design, development, and modification work to do, save your work often. Click File > Save to save the changes without checking in the schema. This action does not validate your changes, and you cannot upgrade the test database with a saved, checked-out version of the schema.

Note that you cannot cancel the schema checkout after you run a test configuration during a schema editing session.

Procedure

To test a schema:

  1. Start the Designer.
  2. In the Rational ClearQuest Schema Repository Explorer view, select the schema version that you want to test.
  3. Click File > Test Configurations to select a test configuration to run. The Run dialog opens.
  4. Select a test configuration to use and then click Run. If you have not created a test configuration, right-click on ClearQuest and then click New to create one.

Your schema changes are saved and validated, and errors are displayed in the Console view. The Designer updates your test database to the new schema version.

  5. Test the schema with the supported clients.
    • On Windows systems, the Rational ClearQuest Client starts so that you can test the schema to see whether it works as expected. The version of the client that opens (Rational ClearQuest Client, Rational ClearQuest for Windows, or Rational ClearQuest Web) depends on the client you specified on the Window > Preferences > Rational ClearQuest Designer > Test Work Defaults preferences page.
    • For Linux, the UNIX system, or Web clients, you must log on to the test database. For Linux and the UNIX system, pay special attention to the layout of forms and the execution of scripts.
