Planning your upgrade

To plan a Rational® ClearQuest® upgrade, identify prerequisite requirements for hardware and software, choose an upgrade strategy, select Rational ClearQuest features to install, understand how to upgrade Rational ClearQuest server components, and prepare your environment.

Hardware, software, and database requirements
Review the requirements information to identify operating system, file system, and compatibility requirements, prerequisite tasks, and other information that is required to install or upgrade Rational ClearQuest.
Choose an upgrade strategy
Decide whether to upgrade the entire Rational ClearQuest: environment at the same time or upgrade in phases. Both strategies offer their own advantages and disadvantages. In the end however, all clients and Rational ClearQuest servers must be upgraded to the same release.
Decide on the feature level for schema repositories and databases
Determine whether to use feature level 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 or 10 for Rational ClearQuest user databases and schema repositories. The feature level determines the ClearQuest features available after deployment. Changes to the feature level might require upgrading the ClearQuest databases and schema repositories. You must also ensure that all ClearQuest clients are running a ClearQuest version that supports the selected feature level.

Considerations for upgrading licensing
Rational ClearQuest version 8.0.x supports DevOps Common Licensing. Based on your upgrade path, determine whether you must upgrade your licensing server and client software and migrate existing licenses to support the newer version.
Upgrade Rational ClearQuest Web Server features: considerations and best practices
When you upgrade, or move, to a new WebSphere® Application Server profile, Rational ClearQuest Web Server, Full Text Search, and Reporting features are installed in the same WebSphere Application Server profile. All of these features must be upgraded, or moved together.
Prepare the environment
Before upgrading Rational ClearQuest, gather information about the server and clients currently deployed including server names, locations, and any information required to access and configure these resources.
